I called my local dealer to get a price on the fluid, and nearly died at his response. These terms are used for identification only. The engine would turn over, but it wouldn't start. This is very common with these cars and usually goes miss diagnosed as a bad rear wheel bearing or a bad differential bearing. This time they replaced the transmission. They checked and said that everything looked fine.
The service rep was pretty cool about it because he agreed the price was crazy but there was no other fluid we can use in it. Took to a local mechanic and was told a whole new transmission was needed. After driving another couple hundred miles I had metal on metal. Or should I just cut my losses and sell the car before the issue pops up again? Now at about 70k one seal is leaking badly. This is the first vehicle I have ever experienced this type of problem with.
Was replaced, but came loose again after a few months. Flushed transmission, but this only solved the lock problem. But that's a major problem! My Vibe has some other more minor defects as well, but in my opinion the rear axle seals are the major lurking problem. Welcome to the site, and best of luck with your new Tek. The first time was in December 2009, affected only the right rear axle seal, and was repaired under warranty.
Logged Yeah well that rear differential leak was it!. One ripped a piece if the transmission case out as well causing the car to leak oil and alerting us to the problem. Update: the replacement transmission fixed the problem. I just filled it up with gas the night before. Had to replace a damaged wiring harness.

My mom originally purchased the car new in the fall of 2005, and I bought it from her three years later. An additional support was added under the transmission. My husband did some research on the internet on Vibes with similar problems, changed the transmission fluid himself and problem was solved. So far, the rear axle seals have leaked three times. The second time was in June 2012, and the third time was November 2017. But the dealership I bought it from is covering it. So the transmission didn't need a fluid change as of yet.
I'm upset because how can you even sell a car that has a problem like that!. A week ago and when I drove it off the lot it was makes a groan high pitched sound. Having the differential fluid level checked at each oil change sounds like a good stopgap solution for minor weeping. Wind noise and tire noise is very loud. It blows outside temperature air. The dumb part of the story. Caliper was bent and destroyed the rotor as well costing me a lot more to get repaired the 2nd time around.
